Training Tips/Blogs
Hunt Test titles can be earned through the AKC and UKC Kennels Clubs. Hunt Tests are non-competitive tests in which the dog (and handler) is measured against a standard. If the dog and handler meet the standard, a "pass" is earned. The AKC and UKC Hunt Tests are designed to resemble actual hunting situations. Each organization has different requirements yet is equally difficult and resembles different hunting situations. Hunt Tests are the most popular field events with retrievers and they are a great way to encourage handlers to continue advancing their dog's development while having fun doing so. When a dog earns a title in either venue, the statement is clear this dog has attained this level of training and has proven so on several different occasions.
AKC Hunt Test Titles
The following letters for each title will appear after the dog's registered name on AKC registration papers once he has attained the title.
JH = Junior Hunter: This is an AKC title that is earned by receiving 4 passes at the Junior level in a licensed Hunt Test. This is the beginning level in the AKC Hunt Test Program. Tests will consist of single marks on both land and water and the dog must deliver the birds to hand. Complete steadiness is not required as you may "gently" restrain the dog by holding it's collar, however, it's a good practice to have a dog that is steady in training before running a Junior Test.
SH = Senior Hunter: This is an AKC title that is earned by receiving 5 passes (4 with a JH title already) at the Senior level in a licensed Hunt Test. This is the intermediate level in the AKC programs. Tests will consist of double marked retrieves, blind retrieves, walk-ups, honoring the working dog, and steadiness is a requirement.
MH = Master Hunter: This is an AKC title that is earned by receiving 6 passes (5 with a SH title already) at the Master level in a licensed Hunt Test. This is the highest possible Hunt Test title offered in the AKC. Tests will consist of triple marked retrieves (sometimes quads), multiple advanced concept blind retrieves, walk-ups, diversions, honoring the working dog, poison birds and steadiness is a requirement.
